Misconceptions about Kayak Safety

Kayaking Safety Myths Debunked

When one looks at a kayak, they may think that it is unsafe –
Something you could never imagine in even a well protected water body, let alone open water. For those who have excellent balance and strength, kayaking would be a piece of cake, and if you think that it is difficult to learn how to kayak, think again.
The reason so many people harbor ideas of unsafe kayaking tours and rentals is due to the myths flying around.

Kayaks Tip Over Easily
This is a false assumption. The hull of a kayak is designed to discourage exactly that. There are models that do tip over, but then there are structures that do not. You just need to know which kayak to go for in what conditions.

Kayaks are Difficult to Paddle In
Sea kayaks are created to cover distance. These are super efficient because they are sleek and have most of the energy put into propelling a kayak forward. With a bit of practice and help from expert instructors at a reputable kayak rental service like kayaks and boards, you should be good to go. A kayak is actually the one vessel that moves with the least affect of wind and waves.

If You Don’t Know How to Roll, You Don’t Know How to Kayak
Rolling may be a fun skill to learn when you are kayaking but in no way is it a skill that you need in order to take your boat and paddle out into the water. Ocean kayaks have huge cockpits, and even though athletes are trained to roll over should a kayak tip, most people just fall out of the craft entirely, and therefore rolling is not a necessity at all.

Kayaks Have no Room at All
When it comes to safety gear and supplies, there is plenty of room in your kayak to pack waterproof bags and even food.

If the Kayak Tips, I am Stuck
No such thing happens. Even if you are wearing a spray skirt, it usually takes a bit of nudge and twist to remove it. If you are type of person who would like to be prepared and cautious for any upcoming situation, you can always learn the wet exit technique.

Kayaking is A Cold Activity
There is a proper way to gear up for kayaking. If you follow the instructions right, you won’t feel too chilly or too hot at all. With a spray skirt, you are literally sealed in what can only be described as a tiny little house. The only things left exposed to the elements are your hands, arms, shoulders, and head. With neoprene gloves, a waterproof shell, and your favorite brimmed hat, you won’t feel exposed to harsh weather at all.
